About Avila Beach, CA
Avila Beach lies on the western slope of the San Luis Obispo Bay, near Placerville. The closest town to the beach is Sun Valley, which is about two miles away. Avila Beach lies on the southern slope of the same bay, about three miles away. This community was chosen by the developer with the intention of incorporating it into a new resort community. The plan was that a large portion of the original beach would be converted into shops, restaurants and hotel facilities, while the two sides of the bay were left open for boating and other recreation. The developer's plan was approved and construction began, but the project stalled when the financial industry declined to invest more money into the project.
Eventually the beach was restored and a new resort was built there with several hundred units, but it closed down in the late 1990s. Recently, however, Avila Beach has started building a second resort there and plans are now in the works to have it complete by the end of next year. The resort will have about thirty beach houses and townhouses, as well as condos for more affluent people. About a dozen of these beach houses are being built with a combination of luxury condos and villas. The townhouses have already been sold and resale prices have already begun.
Another area of Avila Beach that is being developed is the Point San Luis, about three miles away to the north. This part of the beach has the largest number of beaches. In addition, there are several picnic areas, marinas, boaters' watch stations, boat ramps and public parks. The town of Point San Luis lies on the northern end of the beach and was one of the original towns built along the Pacific Ocean. It was the first place where a person could see the now famous San Diego Gas Lamp District.
