Downtown Historic District
The area that is known as the ""Downtown Historic District"" in the city of San Luis Obispo has been around since the early twentieth century. The area was designed as a recreational and business center for those living in the area. The entire district is considered to be one of the most historic areas in the entire country. It is home to some of the most notable people in California, as well as other countries and regions. The area is considered to have a distinct cultural identity because of the many ethnic backgrounds, nationalities, and ages that can be found in the area.
The downtown area of San Luis Obispo has many different neighborhoods that are home to their own unique cultures and histories. These areas are made up of Old Town, Orange County Main Street, Commercial Drive, the Valley District, Westside, First Avenue, Second Avenue, and downtown areas. Each of these is a main historic district in the area, and each has its own unique history and culture.
The historic district was built upon with a series of platted lots that were collectively known as Market Street. This was the first area that was developed in the city of San Luis Obispo and is the same as the Market Street area that is located in the City of Santa Barbara. It is known for having a variety of businesses in the area. The downtown area is very diverse, having many ethnic restaurants, art shops, and large bookstores and specialty stores.
Some of the notable individuals who lived in the historic district at one time or another include: William Mulhaw, a noted dentist; Dr. George Bassett, a noted dentist; Dr. James Beverley, an English doctor; and Dr. George Van Houtte, an English surgeon. These individuals all worked to help promote and develop the area into what it is today. The streets still bear the names of some of these noteworthy individuals. They are still able to be visited and are a great source of information about the past.
